Join us in uplifting local art by volunteering to work with ArtSpan during this year’s milestone 50th SF Open Studios! Your dedicated support helps us honor the incredible contributions of artists to the vibrancy of San Francisco during the 50th year of our legacy program.
We are seeking dependable volunteers able to assist with a variety of roles. Please carefully read the full description of each role to have a clear understanding of the work that would be required. Note that by signing up for a volunteer role the ArtSpan Team is counting on your commitment to being present for your role which is critical for the successful production of the SFOS Exhibition. Should your commitment change, we ask that you notify ArtSpan immediately and at least 1 week in advance.

Wednesday, 9/11
Gallery Wall Gridding
Wednesday, 9/11 11:00am-4:00pm
Under the guidance of ArtSpan staff, measure and install a string grid demarcating the art-hanging spaces in the SOMArts gallery. This is a physically active role that involves taking measurements, basic math, climbing up step-stools or ladders, bending, and push-pinning strings into place. Wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes and clothes you can move and get a bit dirty in.

Artwork Intake Greeter Shift 1
Friday, 9/13 10:30am-1:30pm
Greet artists as they arrive, have artists sign release forms, file forms away, make phone calls to late and no-show artists. Direct artists to Artwork Assessor station. If artwork label information is incorrect, direct them to the ArtSpan team. Dress in layers as you will be seated near an open roll-up door. Masking is optional.

Artwork Assessor Shift 1
Friday, 9/13 10:30am - 1:30pm
Duties include safely handling artwork and unwrapping each incoming piece to inspect the condition of artwork, measuring piece to ensure it is no bigger than 20” on the longest side. Verify that artwork matches what the artist submitted (computer will be provided for this purpose). Check artwork for chipped edges, wet paint, scratches on the frame and glass, and for hanging wire installed; no sawtooth hardware will be accepted unless otherwise approved by an ArtSpan staff member. If an artwork does not look up to par, confer with an ArtSpan team member. Once assessment is complete, connect artists with an Exhibition Installer to assist them with hanging their piece. Help keep the facility organized and tidy.

Sunday, 9/15
Gallery Finishing Touches & Vinyl Install Prep
Sunday, 9/15 11am-1pm
This is an active role that will require being on your feet for extended periods of time. Assist with cleaning the gallery, placing artwork labels, spackling and sanding down holes, straightening and applying museum putty to specific artworks that need additional security to keep them from shifting on the wall. Help place vinyl, put up signage, and other duties as assigned. Wear closed-toed shoes and comfortable clothing. Masking is optional.
Vinyl Lettering Install + Final Gallery Clean Up
Sunday, 9/15 1-4pm
Carefully install/adhere exhibition vinyl on designated walls. Experience in vinyl installation is required. Must be comfortable climbing ladders as vinyl signs are large and will be placed high on the gallery walls. Wear closed-toed shoes and comfortable clothing. Masking is optional.
artlaunch - Thursday, 9/19
Pre-ArtLaunch Gallery Prep
Thursday, 9/19, 1:00-4:00pm
Prepare the gallery for the big reception! This is a physically active role. Attention to detail required. Volunteers must be comfortable standing and bending over for prolonged periods of time to string elastic bands along baseboards and place postcards. Volunteers will assist ArtSpan staff with placing artwork labels, and will scan and check QR codes. Other duties as assigned. Wear closed-toed shoes and comfortable clothing.
ArtLaunch - Bartender Shift 1
Thursday, 9/19, 5:30-7:30pm
This is a physically active role that involves being on your feet for prolonged periods of time. Volunteers will prepare the bar station and pour drinks for guests. Guests wearing a wristband receive complimentary drinks; other guests may exchange single-use complimentary drink tickets. Otherwise, collect suggested drink donations for pours. Must wear all black clothing. Wear comfortable shoes and warm clothes as you will be stationed outside. Masking optional.
ArtLaunch - Bartender Shift 2
Thursday, 9/19, 7:00-9:30pm
This is a physically active role that involves being on your feet for prolonged periods of time. Volunteers will prepare the bar station and pour drinks for guests. Guests wearing a wristband receive complimentary drinks; other guests may exchange single-use complimentary drink tickets. Otherwise, collect suggested drink donations for pours. Must wear all black clothing. Wear comfortable shoes and warm clothes as you will be stationed outside. Masking optional.
ArtLaunch Check-In Greeter Shift 1
Thursday, 9/20, 5:30-7:30pm
Volunteers must have general computer familiarity and be comfortable using Eventbrite check-in platform. Check-In Greeters will welcome attendees and SFOS artists who have RSVP’d to the event. Each guest must be checked-in on Eventbrite—ArtSpan will provide volunteers with laptops for this purpose. Guests who are not RSVP’d must purchase a ticket—notify the ArtSpan staff lead if guests need to purchase an admission ticket. Each Guest receives one complimentary drink ticket. VIP guests must be provided a wristband. Wear comfortable warm clothes as you will be seated outside. Dress in all black. Masking is optional.
ArtLaunch Check-In Greeter Shift 2
Thursday, 9/20, 7:00-9:30pm
Greet attendees & SFOS artists who have registered to attend. Check each person in using the guest list provided and them with one complimentary drink ticket. Notify the ArtSpan staff lead if guests need to purchase an admission ticket. Wear comfortable warm clothes as you will be seated outside. Dress in all black. Mask wearing is optional.Volunteers must have general computer familiarity and be comfortable using Eventbrite check-in platform. Art Tasting/Amplify Awards Ceremony - Hospitality/Bartender Crew
Wednesday, 10/2, 5:00-8:30pm
Prepare the food serving area and bar stations. Help staff set out food platters with serving ware. Pour wine and water for guests. Keep the food stations tidy and consolidate platters as food is taken by guests. Wear gloves when handling food and platters. Collect and throw out empty glasses, plates and napkins. Collect ArtSpan donations. Break down stations at the close of the event. Wear comfortable shoes and dress in all black. Mask wearing is optional.
