When I walk around with my camera in my hands the whole world looks different. I notice the tiniest details. The strange angles. The hidden shadows. When I look through the viewfinder the too big world becomes manageable. Magical. I can take a moment in time and make it last forever. These days we spend so much energy in our journeys from here to there distracting ourselves (cell, mp3, laptop) that we miss the little things. We miss being in and reacting to the present. Now more than ever it is the task of the photographer to capture the present for everyone that missed it the first time around.

I am an abstract painter merging landscape and expression.

My paintings are inspired by places I have been.  I will paint over the first layers of my paintings and continue with additional layers to create thickness of application with a depth that mirrors the deep layers in memory.

In every area of my paintings you can see the heaviness or lightness of my brush strokes as I work to express feelings associated with my thoughts of places I have experienced.

The colorful memories that inspire my paintings include times spent in special locations like the West Shore of Tahoe, Monterey Bay and The San Francisco Bay Area.

Thinking about my experiences as I paint, I find the colors and shapes coming through in the painting, giving each one its own unique feeling and ambiance that hopefully evokes a positive contemplative response from the viewer.

I'm a local Bay Area photographer, designer and instructor. With my photography, my intent is to create high impact impressions that tempt the viewer to pause and contemplate the subject in question. This creates an opportunity for the patterns, textures and structures to slowly unfold, allowing the larger subject to reveal itself.

My work originated in my academic study and evolved out of my travels throughout the world as professional runner. This allowed me to have individual experiences according to each different place I visited inside and outside of Mexico. Similarly, my current residence in the United States lets me be part of Mexican culture in this country where newborn identities among Hispanics, Latinos and Mexicans has become a very turbulent topic.

Describing a subject as “Mexican” is vague and becomes problematic in today’s politically charged climate. Therefore, my work explores the stereotypical concepts of Mexicans, Latinos and Hispanics with the purpose of informing the viewer about the truly multifaceted reality of being “Mexican” and their role in the community.

By merging realistic painting and vibrant flat spaces, my body of work portrays the borderless quality of “present day Mexican”. I have created portraits of contemporary individuals that incorporate the economic, political, and cultural topics that Mexican people love and breathe everyday. These can be seen in their clothing and accessories that “define” each individual.

my poems emerge from the dark of you meeting i. then there is something more than light. there is life.

in this life there are people wanting secret wishes taking shape as poems; friends connecting 3000 miles of wonder and wisdom and what now’s; lovers giving each other keys to rooms they’ve always wanted to open; rain smells on sidewalks; kites shaped like swallows; squirrels; chickens; yes; no; o; oh!; children laughing as mothers underdog them on swings; men named harry and women named betty living in nursing homes writing poems for the first time in their eighty-something years of life, “well,” they say, “how about that.”

that is where magic lies, where a poet turns teacher, meets old people turned friends, and so much waiting and wanting comes alive. that, like tea-lit pumpkins on porches and thousands of fireflies looking like fallen stars over a field at night, and punctuation changing so many things, that is the stuff of my life.
