Rachel Sager is an Oil Painter living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area.  She received a BFA from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia after studying at Lorenzo de' Medici in Florence, Italy.  Her work has been featured in many Internationally juried shows and an Emmy Award-winning Documentary, Sketching the Silk Road.  Currently her influences include Jenny Saville, Alex Kanevsky, Lucian Freud and Odd Nerdrum. She is currently focusing on sweeping, explosive landscapes in her new series.

Matter is presented in a decomposed state, suspended between earth and sky. My exploration of most subjects is mostly visceral, drawing from my own intuition to determine the severity of the atmosphere through my choice of palette and composition.  I draw inspiration from brush fires, demolition explosions, storm clouds (specifically wall clouds, commonly seen in tornado producing weather) and explosives.  My goal is to produce the differences existing between the varying states of this matter, neither solid or gas, yet so specific that a rain cloud could never be mistaken for a cloud consisting of particles that once made up a house or a building. In doing so, I aim to create sweeping, emotionally charged landscapes that convey a dissonance that I experience in self expression.  The turmoil, represented by the debris filled smoke, is juxtaposed by sun infused skies and cirrus clouds, projecting the duplicity that is unavoidable, overwhelming, and at times, awe-inspiring.

My work is about my life history, my friends and family. It springs from my heart onto the canvas. I use wild colors and shapes. The work is naïve, but I’m complicated. There are motors, sound effects, and even a few short films. It’s a kind of therapy. I hope the spirit of it connects.

My work focuses on the atmospheric quality in the sky, resulting in a minimal ‘scape where the mood and emotion is conveyed through the clouds and subtle light. The dramatic subject matter of sky, clouds and weather contain a rich quality of feeling and memory. This is the impetus behind my work, to paint an image that brings me to being on the ocean in the midst of a storm at night.

Hi - I started painting again as an adult when I was pregnant with my son, Zane. Since Zane was born with a rare syndrome, Emanuel's Syndrome, I left teaching to become a stay at home mom. I found myself at home with time on my hands and the need to express myself. Due to my background as a teacher and my new career as a full time mommy of a special child, my subject matter revolved around subjects that appealed to children and adults who are young at heart. My first painting was an elephant – elefante original – 2001.

Elefante original is the most abstract of all my elephant paintings, but one of my personal favorites. I went on to paint several more: elefante anaranjado, elefante feliz, etc., I also started to paint plants, owls, birds, whales, and insects. I like this subject matter, because it's whimsical and works well with my primitive and child-like style. I enjoy starting with a simple subject, like a flower or a giraffe, and then experimenting with the texture and color to create something playful and yummy, but also substantial.

Since then I have branched out to paint some abstracts and to do some collages. I have shown my work locally, nationally, and internationally at various Cafes, Art shows, Galleries, and Art Auctions. My style reflects my personality in that it is eclectic, fun, whimsical, and complex. Life can be daunting at times, but I am still able to find humor and beauty in the most painful of times. I want my artwork to achieve the same effect – to be able to bring joy where maybe there was none before – to transform the darkness into something light and beautiful. My work appeals to art lovers who appreciate the sheer simplicity of my subject matter, and the joy that my work evokes in the viewer.

Also - I do commissions, so if you would like something specific that you do not see, but you think it would work well with my style, then please ask, and I bet we can work something out – many of my paintings have come from ideas from patrons such as yourself -

Thank you for taking the time to read this and to view my work – cheers!!

My practice is comprised of observations on American life, with a specific interest in sociology and media.  Art, in its highest form, serves as a tool for communication.  My goal is to provoke thoughtful analysis of the viewer’s own values when they interact with my work, rather than to persuade them to align their opinions with mine.  Ideally, my work inspires more questions than answers.
