Emilie Dashe is a French American artist born and raised in San Francisco who works with the mediums of oil painting and ceramic sculpture. Her work challenges conventional representations of the female form with non-traditional compositions and mark-making techniques, seeking to confront antiquated aesthetics of male desire with contemporary notions of gender identity. A central component of her work is the presence of a set of creatures called Boobelahs, a name derived from a Yiddish term of endearment. These Boobelahs counteract the ways in which female and non-binary bodies continue to be restricted and commodified through politics and visual media.
