Shmelt is an Oakland, CA, based artist with a passion for geometric design and vibrant color. Inspired by a combination of complex natural patterns like the fibonacci and graffiti style line-work, his imagery seeks to harmonize these two influences to create a unique patterning aesthetic. He creates his patterns by hand-cutting paper to make stencils. These stencils are then spray painted onto clothing or canvas, or laser cut out of wood and turned into three-dimensional sculptures. His spray painted work often employs vivid rainbow color schemes. More recently however, he has been working on a new body of laser cut sculptures using preserved mosses and other scavenged natural materials.
