Artist Statement
I am influenced by color and light in my moods, emotions, well-being. Color and light speak to me in many subtle and significant ways and effect how I see the world. My paintings are an attempt at describing my impressions and conveying my experience with color and light - be it direct or indirect, illuminating an object, allowing for shadow and contrast - even absence of color. My work is inspired by my immediate surroundings, by the beauty I observe in my local environment or the places I visit, whether on city streets, or in the wilderness, at the edge of the ocean, in a weathered industrial building or well-designed public space. My paintings rarely represent reality, are fashioned from memory and imagination; multiple meanings are possible, as well as ambiguous emotions. Often using structural elements when developing content and composition, I feel I have succeeded when my audience engages with a specific piece and finds a connection to their own experience.
