It’s about exposing what lies beneath the surface. This is the only way to feel alive. In this way the nearby ocean has always been an inspiration for Marie Kelzer along with the textured layering of plant life and the architectural structures of the city. The above commissioned book consists of paintings made using the ancient art of mixing paints with a paste mixture to create designs on paper. This technique enables Marie to use the fluidity of the paint paste mixture to create depth by manipulation and layering. As a trained bookbinder Marie was able to expand the constrictions of the production line to the creative aspect of painting onto paper. Her painted paper creations whether displayed framed, in book form, on paper products, floor cloths or fabric, all allow discovery of what lies beneath.
